What can you say about this guy Guy that has not been said before? Nada! His play list was “Santa Lucia”, “old Man River”, “Never on a Sunday”, “The God Father”, “Fiddler on the Roof”, and many more, I lost track!

Harry Thomsen

Harry passed away on Saturday February 8th 2014. He was a gentle man and a gentleman. He was a good friend to all and there when needed. I am sure he will be holding a table for us up there to join him in dancing. Up there is where all dancers go, right?

NOTE FROM YOUR EDITOR
About out Spring Fling, March 22nd, PLEASE get your reservations in NOW. Our reservations are very low, hardly worth having a Spring Fling, in my opinion. Tell you friends and fellow members about this as the printed newsletter does not come until next week or so. Also, page 6 is your renewal form, use it!

Our very own Spring Fling on March 22nd.  NO MEETING ON MARCH 22nd

About the Gumbo Feed
None of this could have happened without the herculean efforts of Kris, Tony(no pics), Jan, Jane, Pete, Annette, John and others. Kris actually took a half day off from work on Monday for us. Kris and Tony started prepping for 5 hours on Sunday, then cooked from 2 PM till 7 PM on Monday. I did not get nearly enough pictures of the crew. Please take a few moments at the Spring Fling to thank them for their efforts!

The President’s Message

Tony Mustaro

Dear Friends,

Last month’s meeting was a lot of fun with a lot of good music. This is what our club is all about. I was very happy to see such a good turnout of members to kick off the new year.

There was a very nice variety of music with selections from Olga Fansler, Xavier de la Prade, Sheri Mignano, Stanko Pecavar, Guy Richards, and George Simko. I even got into the act to play some fun duets with George. I heard many positive comments about our program for the evening.

For the month of February we have another great meeting planned. Kris Nelson is cooking his famous Gumbo for us before the meeting, so come out and bring a friend. We’ll be serving the gumbo with rice, salad and French bread, so there will be plenty to eat and our friends at Hermann Sons will have the bar open if you’re thirsty. Dinner will be served starting at our usual time of 6:30 and the price is, as with all of our club events, a great bargain.

Our featured performer for this month is Joe Domitrowich. It’s always fun when Joe comes to play for us and tells me that he’s worked up a brand new program which he will perform on his one man orchestra. Come on out and have something to eat and see what musical dishes Joe has cooked up for us as well.

Don’t forget next month is our annual Spring Fling dinner dance. We’ll have more great food from Lombardi Catering and wine from Marcucci Winery and dance music from the Steve Balich Band. I am hoping to see another good turnout for this event.

On a sadder note I received a call from Dorothy Orchid to inform me that Carl Fortina has passed away. Carl appeared on the Spike Jones Show, Jack Benny Show, and the Dean Martin Variety Hour as a credited performer. He also worked on the Peter Gunn, Bonanza, and Gun Smoke TV series. Some sources credit him with playing on 25,000 to 35,000 TV shows. He played on over 550 motion picture scores including Charade, Camelot, Raiders of the Lost Ark, and The Godfather. He was a native of San Francisco first appearing before an audience of 17,000 people at five years of age and becoming a well known vaudeville performer as a boy. He moved to Los Angeles in 1949 and started his long career in the TV, recording and movie business. Listen for the accordions of Carl Fortina and Frank Morocco on the Beach Boys gold record song “Wouldn’t It Be Nice”. Carl was one the greats of the accordion world and he will be missed.

Olga Fansler

Olga, played some three very beautiful pieces. “Come to the Sea”, Que Sera Sera” and the “Merry Widow Waltz”. Thank You Olga, keep them coming!

IMG_1001

Xavier de la Prade

Growing up reading comic books, for me Texas always seemed like never, never land. I always enjoyed playing Texas songs. Over the last few years at the Las Vegas Accordion Convention I met a lot of accordionists from Texas, but one of my favorites is George Simko from Lubbock. So here are the songs I played for him when he visited us this month: “San Antonio Rose”, by Bob Wills, “El Paso”, by Marty Robbins, and the the Texas national anthem, The Yellow Rose of Texas”, an old folk song.

IMG_1003

Sheri Migarano

Sheri entertained us with some very moving pieces, “Dark Eyes”, “Bei Mir Bist Du Schoen (To me, you are grand)”, and “Ombrage (a musette)”. Sheri never disappoints, hurry back Sheri

IMG_1004

Stanko Pecavar

Well. what can I say about this young man. He cannot read music, but plays like he was born with an accordion in his veins. This man fell out a tree not all that long ago, and last rights were considered. He is truly a young man and a treasure!

IMG_1005

Guy Richards

What can I say about this guy Guy? I had a rough time keeping up with him, but here is what I could get, ”Vermont”, ‘Stars over Alabama”, “Hello Dolly”, “Jewish Wedding Medley for last girl of Family”, “Jambalaya” , “Tango”, “Zorba the Greek”, “Maria Maria”. It probably would have been easier to name what he did not play.

He is truly an entertainer and treasure to have in our midst!

IMG_1007

George Simko

George is always a treat from Texas. His play list “The Call of the Wild”, ‘Spanish Eyes”, and “Evia Espania” ( a little Paso Doble)

IMG_1008

Tony Mustaro & George Simko

George and Tony teamed up for a duet. A little Polka, “I Wonder Why”, and “Echos of Vienna”. We need to find a way to kidnap George away from Texas!

The President’s Message

Tony Mustaro

Dear Friends,

I would like to take this opportunity to wish all of you a very happy, healthy, and prosperous New Year.

We ended the club’s year of 2013 on a high note with a very well-attended ACR Christmas Dinner Dance. The food for this occasion came from Lombardi Catering right here in Petaluma and we all were very pleased with the dinners they prepared for our event. That dinner was greatly complemented by the excellent Pinot Noir and Zinfandel wines which were generously provided by Marcucci Winery – thanks again to Cheri and Phillip Marcucci. The evening was crowned by the dance music of the Steve Balich Band. It was obvious that everyone there was having a great time. We plan on continuing with similar social events in the coming year, and are looking forward to ever larger turnouts.

I was particularly happy to see Stanko Pecavar and his lovely wife Maria at the Christmas event. We are all very thankful for the excellent recovery he has made from his recent serious accident. Stanko, it’s great to have you back! Come play for a meeting soon.

I have been in touch by telephone with George Simko from Texas and he tells me that he will be here to play for our January meeting. George always has a good presentation for us and is always warmly received. Bring some of your friends the the meeting to hear him play and say hello.

I am happy to report that we had several new members join our club last year and I welcome all of them to our family. One of our new members is Guy Richards, a very talented and accomplished musician and a real crowd pleaser whether his is playing on the accordion or on the piano. Hopefully he will come play one of his request performances for us again soon.

Speaking of musicians coming to entertain us, our February meeting will welcome Joe Domitrowich to offer us his latest solo performance for winter 2014. I assume that Joe will by playing his Concerto electronic accordion next month, but then I have seen him play a Petosa a time or two as well. Whatever he plays we’ll be happy to have him here.

We will be putting on a Gumbo feed courtesy of Chef Kris Nelson before the February meeting so come and have a good meal of gumbo, sour dough bread and salad at 6:30 PM and stay to hear Joe’s music. Dinner will be a $5 donation at the door. I’m sure we’ll lose money at that price, but we’re all here to have fun.

See you at the next meeting.

Christmas Dinner Dance

Thanks to the Marcucci Family

marucci-family

We wish to thank ACR Charter member Phillip Marcucci and his wife, Cheri for their generosity by donating their Fava Bros. Zinfandel wine from the Marcucci Farms to our recent Christmas Dinner/Dance. The wine was of top quality and received many praises. It complimented a delicious dinner.

Arthur Seebach

I’ll let Arthur tell you this in his own words, I played  ……and poorly the following: “Pride of Petravore”, “Orange Rogue- Irish Dance”, and “Ships A Sailing”. I started  with a group of people in San Anselmo aprox.  4 years ago (the leader Jim English and Jennifer, who  have since moved to Ireland).  We were  playing  different tunes,  mostly I got introduced to Irish –  Scottish – Gaelic music. Totally new music  for me at the time, I started learning  them on my old friend,  the acoustic guitar. A  prior car accident at the time when I started to play Irish music severed the ligaments to my  little finger and the ring finger in my left hand . I  was struggling more and more,  playing the guitar at the time and finally had to stop. At that time  at an estate sale I bought my old Hohner accordion. Jim English played different instruments and also repaired and played  the accordion.  His influence and his help to repair my just bought accordion got me  to where I am today. At that time years back,  I had also joined up with  musicians at the ST. Isabella church in Terra Linda and I still play there .  (now with the accordion and I struggle there a lot playing the Irish rhythm,  because of my um- pah pah  upbringing or getting reintroduced to um-pah pah…… you know where !!!) In the past I also have had the opportunity to play with the owner and their friends at the  “Accordion Apocalypse “ store in San Francisco..

IMG_0861

Guy Richards

What can you say about this Guy! He is Juliard trained and a showman un matched. His play list, well, it was request, from you and me. And he knew all of them! He along with Arthur became members this month!

WOW!!

Robert Lunceford, Accordionist | Christiane Lelaure, Vocalist | and Al Haas, Guitar and vocals

Close your eyes and let the music of La Guinguette transport you into the heart of Paris, or perhaps a small town or village in southern Italy. Enchanting melodies made famous by the likes of Edith Piaf, Fabrizio De André, Lucienne Delyle, and Jacques Brel are woven into an embroidery of accordion, guitar, and vocals, performed in the original French and Italian languages.
