ReeDOODER Vol. 238, August, 2016

Presidents Message

Tony Mustaro

Dear Friends,

Our next meeting will be on Monday August 15 at the usual time. Fun band will meet at 6:30 as usual.

I have had various phone calls regarding the change to bi-monthly meeting as opposed to monthly meetings. Of course, that can be discussed and I will open the topic for discussion at the August meeting. The board would welcome your ideas on this topic.

If you would like to express your opinion on this matter or if you know another member who has strong feelings on this matter please attend the meeting and make your ideas known.

The club is selling discounted tickets to the Cotati Accordion Festival again this year. Please see Art Clark regarding tickets. This is a chance to save some money and support your club at the same time.

Diane has done a excellent job on our Facebook page and we have had lots of attention from the accordion world as people ask to join it. Check it out.

The club welcomes Skyler Fell and her Accordion Apocalypse Repair Shop to her new Petaluma location on Bodega Avenue. We are hoping to see Skyler and her friends at our next meeting.

Looking forward to seeing a good turnout this month.

Presidents Message

Tony Mustaro

Dear Friends,

Our next meeting will be on Monday October 17 at the usual time. Fun band will meet at 6:30 as usual.

Unfortunately, I will be on vacation during the week of our next meeting so I will not be able to attend. I say unfortunately because I will miss some great music which we have lined up for that meeting. Steve Albini will be performing – I believe on his Concerto accordion – so you will hear some great acoustic accordion sounds.
I also spoke with George Simko, our long-distance member from Lubbock, Texas and he will be here for the October meeting. George will need the loan of an accordion for that event, so if you can accommodate him in that department please let me know and I will pass along your information to him. (Ooops, George cannot join us. He thought we were talking about September meeting and there was none. So, no George this meeting!)
Don Fertig, our long-time member told me that he will be dusting off the keys of the Hermann Sons piano and playing a few tunes for the meeting as well. I think that I will have to ask Don to give a repeat performance in the near future as I will not be here to listen to him in October.
I’m happy to report that ticket sales for this year’s Cotati Accordion Festival netted the club treasury a total of $117.00. Thanks and kudos to Cathy Patton and Art Clark for volunteering to handle all of the work involved in this activity.
I will remind all of you that we are planning our annual Christmas Dinner Dance this year for the first Saturday in December, so mark that date on your calendar well in advance and try to encourage some friends and family members to attend this year. As always it’s a great deal for a great evening of entertainment. Please remember that we always need volunteers to help with setup, serving, and cleanup for this event. Contact me or any other officer or board member to add your name to the volunteer list this year.
I am happy to relay that we had a very good turnout for our August meeting and I hope that this is the start of an upward trend in attendance. I also welcome your comments on the every other month meeting policy. You can find my email address in this issue of the Reedwooder and if you prefer to use regular mail, my office address is 2323 Fourth St.
Santa Rosa, Ca 95404-3211.
Best wishes go out to member Basil Taylor who has been feeling under the weather, and to sister Good Time Accordion Club member Ed Sciarini who has just undergone bypass surgery. Get well soon.

Presidents Message

Tony Mustaro

Dear Friends,

Please do your best to attend this month’s regular meeting.

We have a special guest artist, Felicia McFall, who is a music student at Santa Rosa Junior College. Felicia will be performing musical selections from well known television shows of several years ago.

We also will be having a pasta feed this month. Dinner will be serviced starting around 6:30 PM so invite some friends to join you.

We have not had any volunteers to run for office again this year so we need to vote on re-electing the current crop for another year.

There will be discussion regarding changes to the club meeting schedule which the board has tentatively adopted in order to keep the club solvent without raising costs to the membership.

Please remember that annual dues are long past due if you have not yet submitted your payment.

The club will also be selling discounted tickets to the Cotati Accordion Festival again this year.

I hope to see many of you at the meeting this month.

Frank played a lively set. For the first time, I knew the first song, “Upalai Upala,” (usually have to ask for it), “Reginella Campagnola (the Wood Pecker Song),” “The Lady is a Tramp,” and “Aristide.” Great fun and really appreciated!

Ken Kelzer

You can always depend on Elmo for a fun and lively playlist, “Sleepy Time Gal,” “Love Me With All Your Heart,” “Mariana,” and “Armore Scusame.”

Sheri Mignano

Sheri Mignano

Sheri’s playlist was lively and in the French venue. She started with “La Goualante de Pauvre Jean” (most Americans know this one as the Poor People of Paris.  It’s an old French tune from Piaf repertoire), and “Sharpshooters March” by Pietro Deiro, “Mon Amant de Saint-Jean,” “Czardas” a gypsy piece by Vittorio Monti  (from early Disney cartoon days), and finished with “Romagna Mia.”

Tony Mustaro

Dear Friends,

Judging from what I saw at the Spring Fling last month, everyone who attended enjoyed the dinner and had a great time dancing. There was lots of good food and drink and lots of good music. Lombardi Catering prepared a great meal for us and the Marcucci Farms wine selection was great as always. Thank you to all of our faithful and reliable volunteers.

That’s the good news. The not-so-good news is that we didn’t make any money from this fund raiser, but, the not-so-bad news is that we didn’t lose any money either; so we held our own this time. Our next dinner dance at Christmas time will hopefully do better in the fund raising department.

As I mentioned in my last message, annual dues were due in April so if you haven’t paid your dues yet they are now officially overdue. Please send your renewal check to Diana at her home address which appears elsewhere in this issue.
We are planning another pasta dinner just before our monthly meeting in June, so please mark your calender to attend. There will be good food and good music and another bargain night out.

We have decided to cancel the July Saturday indoor picnic this year due to lack of attendance at last years event. If anyone has some ideas about events that they would like the club to hold please talk to one of the officers or board members about it. Remember being active is a large part of being healthy both mentally and physically, so try to come up with some club activities in which you would like to participate.

Our editor, Art Clark, had a bit of a health scare this past month but happily he is doing well and getting back to his old self again. Art does a great deal of work to get this newsletter to you so give him a smile and a thanks the next time you see him.

Please get your dues to Diana and do your best to make it to the meetings.

Xavier de la Prade

Xavier’s playlist was simple and fun. In the spirit of St. Patrick’s day he handed out sing-along sheets in green that included “When Irish Eyes Are Smiling,” “My Wild Irish Rose,” “The Rose of Tralee,” “Danny Boy,” and finishing up with “Galway Bay.” It was a great way to start the evening! Thank you Xavier!

IMG_2224

Ken Kelzer

Ken’s playlist was very good. If you remember last time he played for us, it was his first time, and he was a new member. Well he was a bit shy and his voice was a bit low. I commented about that and he practiced on raising his voice and lowering the music a bit. Ken, it worked great. Ken’s playlist was “Skaters Waltz,” “Ripple.” He played this last time and his voice was so low that I had a hard time understanding what it was about. Well this time I heard it quite well and felt the sorrow behind it. He then finished with a kind of sing-along of “When the Saints go Marching In.”
Great job Ken.

IMG_2225

Steve Balich Jr and Sr and Art Wood

What a treat! All three back together again, wow. Their playlist was wonderful, “Basigliera.” “Medley of La Bionda and Il Siro,” “Tic Toc Polka,” “Ho Detto al Sole and Occhi Neri,” “ and “Jenny’s Muzerka.”

This was a quickie of “Mari.”

Their playlist was outstanding, “Blue Skies,” “Besame Mucho,” “All of Me,” “Girl from Ipanema,” “All or Nothing at All,” and finished up with “That’s All.” Steve and Jim were great as usual. I was truly impressed with Art Wood. I have heard him many times, and he was always good. This time he was featured and man, can he play the horns!

Presidents Message

Tony Mustaro

Dear Friends,
Just a quick reminder that our annual Spring Fling Dinner Dance is coming up next month. We ask that you get your reservation is as soon as possible so that we can have the information to the caterer in a timely fashion.
So far we have not had a great response to the call for reservations. Please remember that ours is a social club and we need to have participation from the membership in order to continue to hold these dinner dances. As you know a venue for dancing to live music is getting harder and harder to find. Many of the dance venues that I have attended in the past have stopped functioning due to the high cost of sponsoring such an event. Please help us keep this club tradition alive by supporting this and similar events. Invite friends and acquaintances to attend as well.
The fixed costs for this event are quite high and you can help make them more affordable by supporting a larger turnout. As I have mentioned before, these events are fund raisers to keep the club alive. Dues alone do not cover the clubs operating costs, just as the small donation given at each meeting does not cover the club expenses for the cost of the meeting. Larger attendance at the social events and monthly meetings would correct these problems.

We had a good turnout from the general public for our concert with Tatiana and Steve last month. We hope to sponsor more of these events and, of course, I would like to see a better turnout from our membership.
Annual dues are coming up next month as well as annual elections. I encourage members to consider running for elected office and to present ideas which you think would improve the club at our general meetings or privately to your officers or board members.
We now have a Facebook page as well as a website. I encourage you to visit both of these if you have internet access. We are getting postings from many corners of the accordion world so you’re sure to find something of interest.
This month our meeting will be on March 21. We hope to have a good turnout for the meeting. Steve Albini, Steve Balich, and some others will be playing for us this month. I also heard Steve Balich Sr. playing again at an event I attended about a week ago so maybe we can get him to play a few tunes for us. It should be a good meeting. Try to be there.

For those who did not arrive at the 6:30 jam session, you missed a great show. Carlo was great as always, and Tony was also great! It seems as though when they team up they are better than the parts.
Their playlist was “Tutti Mi Chiamano Bionda,” “Piemonttesina,” “Mart Marie,” and finishing up with “Dicitencello Vuje.” Unfortunately Carlo had to rush of to another gig in the city. He promised to return soon.

His play list was “Hermoso Carino,” “O al Detto,” “Occhi Neri,” “Lupali Lupala,” “Love.” “I Don’t See Me In Your Eyes Anymore,” and “My Wife is Happy Polka.” Thank you Steve for the music, and thank you Cathy for the playlists!

Presidents Message

Tony Mustaro

Dear Friends,
There are lots of activities coming up in the next few months. First, let me remind you that on Friday February 12 we are sponsoring and intimate concert featuring Tatiana Semichastnaya, a world class musician who studied in Russia and who is currently working in Las Vegas, along with Steve Albini an international musician and singer. This event will be open to the public and there is a cover charge of $10 per person. Finger food will be served as well. Please note that there are no free passes for this event.

Following close on the heels of the February 12 concert we will have our next regular meeting on Monday February 15. I have spoken with my friend Carlo Solivan and he plans on singing for the club at our monthly meeting this month. If you’ve heard Carlo perform you’ll want to be there. Bring a friend.

I am hoping that Ron Borelli will be able to perform for us at our March meeting It’s always a treat to have a performer of Ron’s caliber play for us. I will let you know in the next newsletter if he is able to make it. I am making this announcement in advance so that you may invite friends and family to come hear this talented musician. More information is to follow.

As I mentioned in my last message, our annual Spring Fling Dinner Dance will be on Saturday April 16 this year rather than in March. This will place the event after the end of the Lenten Season in accord with several member requests. I would also like to invite our friends from the Petaluma Hermann Sons Lodge to attend this event as well. Remember that the Spring Fling will replace our usual monthly meeting for the month of April.

Another reminder that our yearly membership renewal season will be here shortly. Please get your renewals and membership dues to Diana on time. This will lighten her work load a little and eliminate the need for follow-up notices. While you’re tending to your own renewal think about gifting a membership to a friend or relative who might like to join our club.

Once again I will remind you that elections for the coming year are coming up soon. There is a vacancy on the board which needs to be filled and all of the offices and board positions are open to election as well. If you would like to join us or replace one of us put your name forward.

On a very sad note I offer my condolences to my friend and fellow ACR board member Steve Albini and his family on the death of his father Tony Albini. Tony was a good friend to all who knew him and could often be seen lending his considerable expertise when there were meals to be prepared. He always had a good word for everyone. He will be greatly missed.

Frank Divita

Frank was first up with a great playlist as always and played with heart. His first piece was “Canary Song,” Opali Opala,” “Campanela,” and ending with “Amori Scusi Me.” Great as always; thank you Frank.

IMG_2147

Susanne Leon

Susanne is a past accordion scholarship student of Marge Konrad. Susanne never disappoints.
Her playlist was “Sparkly,” “French Musette,” and finished with “Over the Wave.”
Susanne had to leave early as this was a school night and she had homework. Oh, and she is in the 7th grade. Thank you Susanne.

Ken Kelzer

Ken is our newest member and a first time attendee and player at ACR. His playlist was “Chattanooga Shoe Shine Boy,” “Jambalaya,” “Cio Lito Lingo,” and ending with “The Happy Wander” in both German and English. Boy, we hit the jackpot with him!

IMG_2149

Xavier de la Prade

You may have noticed that Xavier’s playlist is described in the first person, him. He has such great stories behind each piece, I asked him to give me both the playlist and story behind them.
“Because of the shortage of accordionists these days I have learned to come to our meetings prepared. I brought songs I had been working on and I was called to play them. The first was “Me and Bobby McGee” written by Kris Kristofferson and made famous by Janis Joplin. My second song was “Seven Spanish Angels” written by Setzer and Seals and made famous by Willie Nelson and Ray Charles. I also brought lyrics for two songs my Dad liked to sing, “Lilli Marleen” and the “Prisoner’s Song.” I appreciated everyone enthusiastically singing along. That would have been it but fortunately Sheri Mignano was at the meeting. Therefore, we played two songs that she has been helping me with, “Indifference” by Murena & Colombo.
I’m thankful to Sheri for helping me with these songs and making me look good.

IMG_2151

Sheri Magnano

Here I also asked Sheri to tell us about her playlist and the stories behind them.
1. Theme from the film Mondo Cane “More.”.A great rumba and made a big hit by Andy Williams.
2. “Isle of Capri” made famous by Frank Sinatra.
3. Composed by Gorni Kramer in 1937 “Un Giorno Ti Diro.” Someday I will tell you that I love you but for now, I’ll sing this song.  Another fabulous Italian song we will feature in the Valentine’s show at Cinnabar.
4. Edith Piaf’s French classic “La Vie en Rose.”  I see the world through rose-tinted glasses and I express love using a romantic lens.
5. “Un Gamin de Paris” a story about a street urchin in Paris who thinks he›s a toughie but it turns out he is just a kid in search of being loved.
Sheri and Xavier’s duet was “L’indifference” a classic French musette waltz. composed by Joseph Colombo and “La Reine de Musette” by Peytronnin, two beautiful French musette pieces. Virtually all French musette music were written by immigrant Italians in Paris.

Presidents Message

Dear Friends,
I hope that everyone had a great holiday season and that you are all ready to start another year which will go by all too fast. As those of you who attended know, our Christmas Dinner Dance was a great success with good food, good wine, and good music. Thanks to all who contributed to its success, and special thanks to Steve Balich Jr. and Cheri and Phil Marcucci.

We have some exciting events coming up during the winter season this year. On Friday February 12 we are sponsoring and intimate concert featuring Tatiana Semichastnaya, a world class musician who studied in Russia and who is currently working in Las Vegas, along with Steve Albini an international musician and singer. This event will be open to the public and there is a cover charge of $10 per person. This will be an exciting evening for all who attend and seating and ticket sales will be limited so members may purchase advance tickets at our January meeting. See any one of your officers to do this. Please see the announcement for this event elsewhere in this issue. Also be aware that this event will NOT replace our monthly meeting which will take place on Monday February 15.

Our annual Spring Fling Dinner Dance which usually takes place in March will occur on Saturday April 16 this year. This will accommodate those of you who wanted this social event to take place after the Lenten Season. Please get you reservations in early this year to avoid a price increase which will go into effect after the cutoff date listed in the reservation form seen in this issue. We are hoping for a very good turnout this year as the fixed expenses attached to sponsoring this event are considerable and we are doing our best to hold the line on the cost of tickets. Remember that the more attendees we have at these events the more we are able to offset these fixed costs. Encourage your friends and families to attend. It’s always a great bargain.

Yearly dues are coming around again and I want to encourage you to get your renewals in early or at least on time. This saves the club money by not making it necessary to mail out reminders and it saves a lot of time and work for our treasurer, Diana Santi, who like all of your board members and officers and other volunteers, donates a great deal of her time to the club. Please be considerate of those whose efforts keep the club going.

Remember that elections are coming up in April, so if you are interested in standing for election contact me or any other board member.

That’s all for now. Hope to see many of you at the February 12 concert, and at the January 18th monthly meeting.
